Allegheny Health Network and The START Center for Cancer Research announced on August 25, 2026 that they will establish a START early-phase oncology trial site inside the AHN Cancer Center at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. The site is to be fully integrated into START's network from its first day, with access to the company's global portfolio of industry-sponsored early-phase studies. The release names no opening date and no target number of trials for the Pittsburgh site.

The site goes inside the hospital, not next to it
The structure START describes is a research unit embedded in the treating cancer center, so that a patient seen at Allegheny General is offered an early-phase study as part of the existing visit rather than referred out of the region. START's model, in its own words, is "community-based" early-phase work, and the release argues that western Pennsylvania patients have "historically had limited local access" to such trials and have often had to travel to join one. AHN draws patients from a five-state footprint that takes in adjacent parts of Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland and New York.

David Bartlett frames it as care, not a referral pipeline
"Through this endeavor, we're incorporating groundbreaking clinical research into the care we provide every day so patients can benefit from the latest advancements close to home," said David Bartlett, MD, who chairs the AHN Cancer Center and leads the AHN Research Institute. The release adds that the Cancer Center already houses genomic profiling and clinical research programs, which is the infrastructure a phase 1 unit needs for molecular eligibility screening.
Several operating details are missing. There is no opening date, no named principal investigator for Pittsburgh, no count of studies expected to open there, and no statement of which party staffs the unit or funds it. The release also carries two different site counts for START, "16 locations" in one paragraph and "15 clinical trial sites" in the boilerplate, which likely reflects the Pittsburgh addition but is not explained. PR Newswire lists a similar START announcement with Baptist Health South Florida among the company's recent releases, suggesting the Pittsburgh deal follows a template the company is repeating with regional health systems.
Why This Matters to the APO|APE Reader
Pittsburgh's early-phase capacity has to date run largely through the academic center across town, and START's arrival at Allegheny General puts a second, industry-facing phase 1 door in the same city, one that will compete for the same referring physicians and the same molecularly selected patients. For pathology, an embedded early-phase unit means more requests for rapid biomarker turnaround, archival tissue retrieval and research biopsies routed through a community hospital lab that has not previously served a phase 1 portfolio of this size.
